Throwback 1975: Oakley Celebrates 35th Birthday in NYC With “History of Oakley” Collection Unveiling

Retro 4

Fact. Oakley’s original product: A super killer motocross grip.

The little known trivia tidbit became apparent for all the guests at Staple Design’s retail store, Reed Space, in New York last week – as they admired retro ads featuring ‘the Oakley Grip’ from the storied company’s founding year on display.

Oakley teamed up with designer Jeff Staple to celebrate 35 years of greatness at the boutique by unveiling the first two of six total pieces from The History of Oakley collaborative collection, which pairs up the iconic Eyeshades, Razorblades and Frogskins with the contemporary Radar, Jawbone and Holbrook shades.

The event was hot…in both the literal and figurative sense. New York’s summer weather — mainly humidity – can get a little unbearable, but not even the natural elements would be enough to keep people from rocking this event. Oakley and STPL fans came out in large numbers to catch an up close and personal glimpse of the whole collection and to get their hands on the first two pieces released from it: the Eyeshades and Radar.

In addition to the release, the crew at Reed Space created a very special mini-museum, which featured production sketches of Oakley product, iconic Oakley advertisements, as well as original Oakley product. To top it all off, they reached out to legendary DJ/Producer, Just Blaze, to lay down the evening’s soundtrack. Sufficed to say, the place got jumping pretty quick. Supporters of both brands mingled and enjoyed the amazing company and atmosphere – making for one amazing launch.

To say the event whetted the appetite for the release of the rest of the collection would be a massive understatement. There was a healthy flow of inquiries on how to get a hold of the remaining pieces. But, thankfully, the wait for the last four parts to the collection won’t be long: The remainder will be launching over the next two months. When complete, admirers of the collection will be able to experience Oakley’s roots meeting its immense progression: reflected greatly by the vibrant NYC event.

In summary, the throwback party was just an overall amazing gathering that celebrated Oakley’s 35 rockin’ years of utter tail kicking – paying homage to the company’s roots and looking forward to its bright future!

Happy Birthday O!
